- Day 1 - Week 16 - Five More Easy Things You Can Do
Yesterday, I offered a few
suggestions on how our simple behavioral
modification can result in a reduction in the
pollution in the atmosphere and eventually, if all
were to adopt new patterns, an impact on our own
health would result.
How can I take responsibility
for my own health, is a question I am being asked
more and more every day? Diet, exercise, music,
stress reduction techniques and a host of other well
outlined behavioral strategies are coming more into
focus daily, but there are some things we may not
think about that directly impact the common good.
(Suggestions one through five -
see yesterdays
offering)
1.
Buy energy saving compact fluorescent light
bulbs and other energy efficient products.
a.
Look for Energy Star label on appliances
The key here is that
saving energy reduces the need to produce energy
which is polluting by its very nature. Less
pollution, better health – simple equation.
2.
Recycle – less energy is required to turn
recycled products into new products than producing
new products from raw materials.
a.
At home curbside recycling programs are
valuable to the environment and the city’s bottom
line.
3.
Shop Green - There is a web-site called Eco-Mall.com
that offers everything from organic and hemp
clothing to non-toxic cleaners and solar energy
products.
4.
Keep the car tuned, if you drive a combustion
engine vehicle. Keep the tires inflated to the
manufacturer’s recommendation – you will achieve
better gas mileage and save money and clean the
environment with just a little attention to the
details.
5.
When shopping for a new car consider the
hybrids on the market. If you want more luxury than
the Prius look at the Toyota Highlander, or the
Lexus SUV. On the horizon is the plug in hybrid and
a resurrection of the electric car.
10 commandments have guided
cultures through the eons of time and now it is time
for many other sets of 10 to guide us to restorative
health. Each little step along the way makes a
difference. Keep up the good work.
