June 11, 2006 - Day 5 - Week 10 - Suggestions From 1995

In a week of stealing from my own little book on the environment I have painted a canvas that continues expand and change.  An artist creates from inspiration, but perspiration often signals who is going to be the successful painter.  In like fashion, changing away from our chemical addiction will require education, understanding, and diligence.  Purchasing products that protect me and my family are available, yet often not as easy to find as the conventional offerings from Wal Mart, Home Depot or our local favorite garden supply store.  Therefore, one of the great gifts given to the human family must be constantly employed, and that is the value of discernment.

Now that my personal immune system has been compromised, perhaps for a variety of known and unknown reasons, I must work even harder to continuously discern what is good for my health and what is detrimental to my well being.  This applies to all aspects of my life.

I wrote down a few ideas in 1995, and I share this now.

“Another line of defense is consumer action designed to encourage people to buy more non toxic products, drive their cars less, and strive for a chemically free home environment.  Also, teaching our children how to grow their own food in cooperative community organic gardens may give them the skills necessary for the restoration of their own health. Teaching them the value of composting may revolutionize agriculture.

(Here is a radical concept that goes all the way back to the 2nd World War where our nation encouraged home and community Victory Gardens.) Composting and gardening should be taught beginning in the first grade in school.  Quoting from the Walt Disney Company’s environmental activities report:  ‘Walt Disney World has created a state of the art composting system to handle its sewage sludge.  This successful program has recently expanded to accommodate landscape and food waste as well.  The compost currently produced is being used as a soil amendment by the Horticulture Department.”  The vast Disney empire sees the worth of composting.  I can see Mickey and Minnie teaching our children how to become chemically free and composting competent.

Habits can be changed, and with a little help from our friends like Disney and Earth Save, an environmental organization promoting a chemically free vegetarian diet, our entire educational food delivery system could have safer, healthier foods for our children. With clean air and clean food, clean healthy children can become commonplace again.”

Our children are our greatest natural resource. Keeping our natural environment healthy helps guarantee that our living treasures have a secure future.
