June 7, 2006 - Day 1 - Week 10 - Pg. 45  Earth’s Killer C’s

On June 4th I began a series of daily writings that gleaned material from a book I wrote about the environment.  My intention is to build a base or a platform from which to launch a personal compendium of useful material and ideas so future generations, or at least my own children and grandchildren, and perhaps those of my extended family and friends as well, can be armed with information to prevent cancer.  Cures, treatments, vaccines, and alternative therapies are in the hands of well qualified experts.  I learn from them and incorporate their teachings into my living.  However, my agenda is clear; I want to help in the fight to prevent cancer from occurring in the first place.  With this is mind let us return to what I wrote 14 years ago.

“We are not helpless in the face of cancer’s growth and the environment’s decay.

The late Norman Cousins, another of our Healing C persons of the 20th century, (Cousteau being another), encouraged people with cancer to use humor and a positive mental outlook to help in the healing process.  He was well aware that a good external attitude helped maintain a good internal environment.  He knew that stress and anger, on the other hand, may potentially harm the healing process.  In similar fashion, a positive attitude about helping restore, heal and preserve the external environment is essential today.

Members of the healing professions are also a very important component of an emerging environmental awareness in this country.  A significant coalition that will help deter the spread of cancer and fix the environment is an alliance between the helping professions and environmental activists.  This team would accelerate increased awareness about the connection between cancer and the causes.

Doctors, healers, psychiatrists, psychologists and counselors, by waving a discussion of the environment into their office visits, will help heal millions of sick people.  Sensitivity to diet, attitude and lifestyle coupled with keeping air, food and water clean will become the leading health delivery system in the next few years.

Cancer clusters, or unusual amounts of cancer in one area (for example: Delano and McFarland California, in the heart of the farm belt, southern Louisiana which is known as chemical ally) happen for a variety of reasons.  A coalition of cancer cops and healers might be just the antidote researchers have been trying to find for years.

“Fix the environment and CURE CANCER” should be stenciled on every automobile, water deliver system, smokestack, and factory in the nation. “Fix the environment and CURE CANCER’ posted on the front door of every doctor’s office and health food cooperative would remind us that each of us can take responsibility for our won health and long term well being.”

Ideas to ponder.  In retrospect I might have done a better job of pondering my own words.
